|does hosting affect rankings in EU countries?|

I'm in the process of translating a UK website into portuguese and spanish to enter two new european markets.
If I want to be indexed by google.pt and google.es - do I need to host the sites in the native country or can I still host them in the UK on our own servers?
Any advice or examples greatly appreciated?

Are you going to get TLDs for Spain and Portugal? In that case yes, your sites will have an advantage, same as if you were hosting these sites in their target country.

yes, we have the relevant .pt and .es domain names - have toyed with using a .com to cover everything but not sure this would be advantageous?

I'd go with the ccTLDs, the days of a .com ranking well in all the Gs are just about over....
