Has anyone heard whether the HTML <base> tag helps search engine spiders overcome the issues with relative linking?

From what I've researched it seems that search engine spiders prefer absolute linking vs. relative linking. Also, I've witnessed 3rd party crawlers the have issues with relative linking when a website utilizes sub-domains. It will be a significant issue to update all our relative links (because of syndication of content) but I was hoping this might be a possible solution.
