Choosing the competitve niches biggest mistake?

I started writing my site seven months back in a very competitive niche. Since then for traffic concerns my site is having the hard time..Because of all time continuous learning and failures I though the internet website promotion is hardest thing to achieve....But recently my thinking has changed a lot when I see unassigned PR sites to show up in SERP that deals with topic with lesser competitors. Now i am searching for a unique idea for another site and sit back leaving my site where it was....Anybody here wanna share his/her past experience?
