Image tag not validating, but everyone using it?

In my .rss feed I use:

<image><img src="http://www.example.co.uk/images/image.gif" height="49" width="70" alt="Alt text" align="left" /></image>

between the <description> and <link> tags for each <item>. The feed shows fine and most of the feeds I subscribe to use the same format. But I just entered it into a feed validator and it says there is no such tag?

That doesn't look standard. The RSS 2.0 Standard [cyber.law.harvard.edu] shows the <image> being added like the example in this thread: inserting images into an rss feed [webmasterworld.com]
