Hi I have a site that that has more than 50,000 urls so I have created xml.gz zipped xml sitemap file and submitted the same via webmaster tools. Is is necessary to replace the old xml sitemap file mydomainname/Sietmap.xml? and where shall I place the new xml.gz file?

Sitemaps generally should be placed in the root of the domain. Technically you do not need to replace anything. You can upload several sitemaps.
Some people split up the sitemaps into smaller files to keep it simple and to better monitor which urls from which sitemaps are getting picked up.
