I would like to know if I should exclude image URLs from my XML sitemap. It is a relatively small site, but I wanted to know best practices and how you guys deal with image URLs with-in your XML sitemaps.

I personally do not include image urls in sitemaps. I simply list them on well linked pages with alt tags and unique filenames. My images rank well in image searches.

If images are very important to your business model you may want to include them in your sitemap. In general I would not add to a sitemap just to increase its size.

I would check out Google's help section on sitemap guidelines. I believe they do not recommend adding image URLs to a sitemap.
