According to this page

[google.com...]

a txt file can be submitted instead of an xml file. Any benefits, drawbacks, etc?

Thanks.

When Google and the other search engines launched sitemaps they announced txt and xml files would be accepted. Txt files are generally easier to manually create (especially for non-tech people). XML is generally easier to generate with extra data like last modified field for large sites.
