I have added several RSS feeds into more than one web site without any modification to the .htaccess file. However, the process involved Java Script rather than PHP. Actually, there is a site that will process the RSS feed (xml format) and convert into Java Script which can then easily be added into your existing site's html. Check <snip> and see if that approach is not more practical.
