Google's market share grew dramatically when AOL made it its default search engine. Just think ... All those AOL browsers [5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0] scattered all over the world with their search boxes pointing to Google are key for Google's survival. And guess what ... Microsoft made those browsers. Therefore, the open source community's idea that Microsoft "is thinking, if we can't beat Google..." is flawed. Instead, Microsoft knows Google's market share could easily be shaked up with: 1. A deal with AOL
