The browsers themselves do not help in the least.
By phone, tell someone to enter some obscure, possibly new, URL. They will reply: "My browser can't find it." Ask them where they entered the URL and most will say, "In the browser." Pin them down to specifics and it'll be either in the search box in the browser's top bar or in some SE that's been set up as their home page. Almost never in the proper Loacation field.
And what are the usual defaults for all of this? Guess!
A while ago FF removed G from the top search box. Then did a deal with G and put it back again. Me, I removed the complete search box.
