Just noticed these today and went looking for a thread here. In my experience, it gives off the impression that they're unable to return proper search results, so they hired some 'editors' to supplement these with some 'picks'. You'd think these hand-selected sites would have to be real gems, but I've looked at a few categories and it's just embarrassing. Lots of Adsense-laden, likely-to-be-Pandalized sites that give a poor user experience, not even the type of sites you'd want in your search engine's result pages -- i.e. I don't get it.
