the four laptops I reinstalled in the last few weeks Bing popped up before I killed it and replaced it with Google

I suspect that the increased market share is largely due to new computers and new installs rather than advertising or any particular fondness for the product - changing the default from Bing to Google is simply too difficult for the average punter (as was no doubt intended).

It's no great surprise though, and variety remains the spice of life.
