we've encountered the same thing.

On one of the G groups, I think Froogle group, a googler posted that they were doing some maintenance / upgrades to the interactive uploads, but the ftp bulk should work fine.

our prods as well expire (today / feb 1) and we've used the ftp upload, but still to updates to the DB. Hope all our prods don't expire.

Oh well.. ya get what ya pay for (and you cant use blood, sweat and tears as currency!).
