yes they can crawl the urls, although for a week during this process I did add them, but then removed them from robots txt.
It was when I found cached content in WMT that was at least 9 months old, that I felt I needed to force google to remove its cache using the remove tool.
The redirects had been done 9 months ago through htaccess.
But then later thought, have I tried to removed a cached version that is no longer there, or have I removed a cached page that has 301 redirect information on it. As I said these pages are no longer in the index.
Some more recent redirects of old pages are still listed in the index, but the old pages dont appear to have any cached verion, so I assume the redirect has now been found and has no value and just waiting to drop off.
