Thanks for the suggestion phranque, but I already did that a year ago. Googlebot is still fetching from example.com, even though that is also 301'd for every load, and has been set as the NON preferred domain for a year.
GWT seems to have no way to associate 220.127.116.11 with a preferred domain (or any domain) - many options say "Restricted to root level domains only"
So I'm left with 3 verified sites that are actually identical, www.example.com preferred over example.com, yet Googlebot is still fetching from www.example.com (200), example.com (301) and 18.104.22.168 (301). It really is a waste of resources to fetch everything 3 times, particularly because I have a huge number of pages.
I've added the "X-Robots-Tag: noindex" header to the 301 redirect to try to send a stronger message to Googlebot that I do not want these URLs in their index.
