Actually, the comments were needed for first generation browsers Mosaic and Netscape 1. (source: [javascript.crockford.com...] Note, those browsers have been dead for over a decade, and it's unfortunate that there's still so many out of date tutorials that include this practice. It's not needed and hasn't been for many, many years.
