I wasn't even aware that Intel was in the motherboard business. I've only ever equated them with processors. When it comes to desktop motherboards the manufacturers that come to mind for me without looking them up is Asus and Gigabyte?
Desktops will always be around. We're just going through a transition phase where there is a pent-up demand by people wanting to have the freedom of mobility. For the average person who cannot afford both mobile and desktop their immediate need most likely shifts to mobile, with an eye on a desktop in the future.
At least that's the case for me. I have this new laptop because I need the ability to bring my work with me where ever I go. If not for that I would prefer a desktop because I could probably get twice the computing power for the same price (at current desktop prices). There will be another in my future when I can justify it in my budget.
I suppose it could lead to a short-term increase in desktop prices. But for me, I'll be in the market for another good custom made desktop that I can whip the covers off and tinker with.
