Just because I have a smart phone doesn't mean I'm "switching away" from a real camera or a stand alone MP3 player but since I already have those devices, like most everyone, the likelihood of buying new ones are slim.

Smart phones suck the life out of batteries yet the tiny little MP3 player will easily give me 12 hours of play time which is perfect for very long cross country flights and you still have a charged battery on your phone when you get to your destination.

Obviously I don't normally carry both devices, but I do when I fly.

Everything has it's purpose :)
