How common is it that someone amends their CV ?

Ive been surprised by this and its more common than I realized , an MD of a firm once confided in me that he was a failed lawyer and he only took his recent job as he needed a job, no other reason.....

Looking at Linkedin I found his CV, no mention of ever being a solicitor - surprised I truly was, I only looked to see how he handle it on his CV.

Their own HR officer has also lied on her CV ! failing to mention firms that she worked for that went busted, another director has also failed to mention a previous job for various reasons.

Has anyone else come across this in such a high employment positions ?
