if the new movies follow on from the return of the jedi then a lot of the old characters wont be in it, that is what might disappoint me.

Don't bet on it. Episodes I-III managed to include supporting characters that the leads in Episode IV were clearly shown meeting for the first time. And, conversely, Episode IV had at least one character personally remembering someone that Episodes I-III made it clear she never knew. You just gamble that your readers or viewers won't remember the earlier segments. Happens all the time. ("What do you mean, I said something on the /paperknife/ page that flatly contradicts what I say on the /leafcutter/ page?")
