We didn't refer to it so much as a boat (because to me a boat is bigger)
Can't get much smaller than a boat. "Aluminum dinghy" doesn't sound quite right.
Quick detour to dictionary tells me that "bateau" can translate both "boat" and "ship", which explains much. If you want to be hair-splittingly technical, a ship has a deck and a boat doesn't. But it you're thinking about your hair you're not paying enough attention to handling the boat. Of any size.
