Canceling a credit card is no different from closing a checking account. It doesn't absolve you from paying new bills; in some circumstances it may even bump a civil dispute up to a criminal offense. So at a minimum, don't do it unless you can prove absolutely that you have taken the required steps to close your account with the vendor.
