Also, the second w is redundant. Wouldn't world-wide-web be the same as world-web? We could have had ww.webmasterworld.com!

I have always wondered why they didn't use 'web' - web.webmasterworld.com.

But then again, most people when setting up web addresses look at how it LOOKS and not how difficult it is to SPEAK. Lots of companies have appalling web addresses that are so difficult to say, add the www to that and it tkaes longer to tell someone what the address is, than it would be to give them the info they want over the phone - 'is there a dash between web and master and master and world?'.
