It's better for them if the battery just dies and you have to buy a new phone

Actually that's not the case because when pressured to either a) send in the phone for "repair" just to put in a new battery or b) buy a new phone to avoid being without a phone while the battery is replaced, many may opt to simply switch phones to a reasonable brand that won't force them to be in such a bad situation in the future.

You can only burn consumers so many times before they shop elsewhere.
