Hmm... I'm going with a stream of consciousness thing here, so bear with me.

I see 3 primary components:
1. Primary Unit
2. Collector
3. Trigger

I would assume that the primary unit has a receiver circuit on it, and the collector is tehre to minimize background interference. Due to the apparent symmetrical nature of the collector, I'd guess orientation of the device does not matter. I notice on the primary unit is what appears to be a know, possibly a variable adjustor which will change the sensitivity or recalibrate the device?

IMHO, the collector is not wide enough for it to collect sound. Additionally, it looks as though the collector is made of some sort of plastic so that rules out the ability to collect any radioactive materials except for alpha rays.

The back of the primary unit, where the 'knob' is doesn't seem to have much room for a readout display. So I would guess it's a simple feedback device. Maybe a green/red light or a beeping noise for the presence of something.

Perhaps an old fashioned stud finder? No... because that cone doesn't seem like it would work well with an emitter. BUt perhaps the device is meant to be placed up against something.

Well, you got me... hopefully some of my ranting is on target and will help someone figure it out.
