If people don't want ads, they don't want ads.
Most surfers are sympathetic to ads as long as they are not intrusive
I have tested on my main website, a lightbox explaining my cookie policy and give surfers a option of viewing the site with or without ads.
If they choose no ads, I put text where the ad would be, saying in effect, "This site supports itself by its ads"
My ad revenue has increased since doing this, so I am testing it on other sites.
