Right, but with the right media queries, you could make both sidebars show up. That's what responsive design is all about - the media queries.

As far as seeing the ipad, there are several ways to do it. In FireFox I have the web developer extension, and that allows me to resize the window to 768 x 1024 (which is typical ipad viewing)

But that still supposes you have it online already. Unless you want to just view it on your hard drive.
