Speaking of new formats, a quick massage of the Google Syndication code can get it to produce XML rather than HTML output - which would mean that:

1) the ad code could be produced server-side rather than relying on iframe support in the browser.
2) the ads could be displayed in ANY custom configuration of the publisher's choosing (don't like the leaderboard and want 3 ads in a triangle instead? a quick bit of code and there you go)

I have NOT yet seen an announcement of this being official - so attempting to use it for your content pages would probably be suicide at this stage. It may be something under development or possibly what they use for their major publishers.
