I cringe whenever I read advice like that.

I don't view it that way at all

It's like someone who loves and knows a lot about squirrels. Sure, that person can write all they want about squirrels. But can that person make a lot of money with Adsense on squirrels? Probably not.

It all depends on what that person wants.

If that person simply wants to express his passion for squirrels, then go ahead and write about squirrels. Create websites with thousands of pages on squirrels. Use Adsense -- but don't complain that you are not making any money at all. Because most probably you won't

So if the goal of that person is to make money, to earn a living for himself and his family, then the smart thing for that person is to pursue a topic where advertisers pay a lot of money to reach. Go where the opportunities lie. Create a website where you can really earn.

It is all about the person's goals. And being smart about what they want. Everything can be learned; the person doesn't have to steal content.
