Plus many addresses are long, and people are lazy.
Stats show that large percentage of people find Google by typing "Google" in the search box of the Google toolbar. When they learn to type "google.com" directly at the address bar I start to worry (after that it probably takes couple of years after they learn to press enter after that ;-D).
