In theory, I would guess that they are running experiments, and hopefully keeping data, on increasing their revenue for adsense. Which, if successful, would mean increased revenue for publishers. Because they are seeing a much bigger sample than our individual web sites, as far as any of us know, the o’s may have increased their revenues a lot over the entire population of all the publisher’s pages combined.

If the above is correct, I hope they are _not_ doing to increase their revenues while decreasing the revenues of publishers. I doubt they are, but who knows.

I remember reading that MS hired psychologist to aid in designing the Windows interface’s default colors. Perhaps (G) is also doing something similar and testing the theories. I have seen Motorola also do stuff like that. Big companies can do some pretty strange and costly things to increse profits or market shares based on long term forcasts.
