If the site is running AdSense, it's probably getting competitors' text ads, so competing "Google Gadget" ads are merely a variation on an existing problem. Still, if competitors' text ads don't bother you, you can always disable image ads via the AdSense control panel.
I can see lots of potential for conflict with sites' own content, for example a travel site that already offers hotel/car reservations could end up with a competing gadget on the same page.
