Well it's been a few days now, and I still can't access the account using the new username and password (gmail account from previous). I can still get in on the old username, and when I do there's my old mate the wizard ready to guide me through the process of changing my login. However, there's also a dialogue box asking if I'm [new username] and if so they want to inform me that I've already changed my details and I can log in using [new username].

But see, I can't.
