More than you might think. For example, a publisher can try other ad networks, affiliate programs, and selling ads or sponsorships direct. There's nothing wrong with relying on a single income source if you don't need it (for example, if you have a day job and the site is just a sideline). But if you want to turn Web publishing into a full-time occupation and you've got bills to pay every month, having one revenue source is like being a consultant or freelancer who earns all of his income from one client who could leave at any time.
