Whether anyone wants to believe if they are effective or not is up to them I suppose. All I know is that I have been in the Internet advertising business since 1995 and believe what I have seen from past campaigns :-)
It is true that 'clicks' may not be as much as on websites but that's about it. Even that is questionable since targeting can be done to demographics, geographics etc. that isn't being done on websites.
So, I'll say it again with confidence, if Google follows the same proven methods that are in use today it will work.
