That's effectively a huge Google tax imposed on online businesses.

That's exactly what it is and considering they use our content to make their fortunes I've tolerated it about as much as I care to really. I'll self impose a hit of 100% Google traffic loss in exchange for blocking them entirely and not having to worry about backlinks and junk if it goes much farther.
