Google is not charging users to send a query or receive results. However, the rates that your mobile operator charges for sending and receiving a text message still apply. Also note that your operator may charge you a non-standard rate specifically applied to the use of short code services which may not be covered in your current data services plan
A-Ha. Now, this is technically true - Google is not charging the users (the mobile operator does), BUT the mobile operator typically shares the revenue of "non-standard rates" with the content provider (i.e. Google). That makes it possible to send the SMS back to the users. I smell a new revenue stream for Google here. Tom, would you mind checking the rates for the GOOGL shortcode with your mobile operator? That would be great to know.
