I don't think this is the most productive move by Google either. But you have to remember who their target audience is.
IMO, we (users who frequent WW) are a bunch of web-mastering, IT, computer-lovin', search-optimizin', VMWarin', cable-splicin', OS-tweakin', tech-heads. Google isn't creating a Groupon competitor for us--it's for the same people who love Groupon. That audience will determine whether it's a success or a failure. And as Demaestro pointed out, Google can certainly write their own pink slip if they don't provide adequate support.
