If a term is deemed generic, it can't be trademarked or defended as a trademark, even if it was once a branded term. Hence Kleenex can no longer sue over the use of it's name in normal circumstances and why Google is fighting so hard against journalists useing their name as a verb meaning to search the web. In most offline scenarios, American Airlines would have a case, but in a search enviroment, the term is genaric.
trademarked and protected wether anyone thinks its generic or not
