Forking and options are very much within the open source philosophy.

Has sourceforge made any real improvements since the days of VA Linux Systems? I haven't noticed any.

I actually suggested this a couple of years ago in one of those "What can Google do for webmasters" threads a couple of years ago. Google has the resources, and it is a way to give back to the community.
