Great post! I think Microsoft's intention with hasLayout was to provide sections of a page that would run independently, with a view to providing future web apps. But I'm just going by what I've read, and also some guess work. What I find bad is how Microsoft themselves must know exactly how their browser works*, and could explain everything for us, but of course they won't. So everyone is trying to figure out how it works, often banging our heads against a brick wall. Thank God for people like Dean Edwards who have discovered so much about IE. *Or do they? Perhaps the original programmers have moved on, leaving newer ones in the dark, unable to fix the code.
