Fascinating post, Suzy! I'm aware of some of the hacks such as using _height:1%; (underscore hack) to trigger hasLayout, but do you think that those hacks (as well as the inline-block one) could be compromised with the upcoming IE7? It could lead to the breakage of some current designs.

I get the impression that understanding the implications of hasLayout is critical to understanding IE behaviour.
