thanks for the help and tests guys.
much of what you did, I didn't know was possible.
I am happy to learn that the HTML is squeaky clean :)

my page is DIV nested because I could not find a theme that did what I wanted, so I modified it myself until I got the display that I wanted.

is there a different way to do what I did ?
although from the looks of things, that is not the cause of the speed issue.
I will check the speed issue as Alt suggested later today.
