Hi css_newbie and welcome to WebmasterWorld :),
I understand your explanation of the issue, but I'm not quite sure what element has been set as the column spanning "header" - which may be relevant - can you provide a little more information?
However, considering just the borders, how you "know" the borders have been set to transparent? The reason for asking is that I am trying to establish whether you believe there is a specific rule that is overriding the styles for .testlockColumnHeader - and setting them as "transparent", or whether the borders are simply not visible - which would be a different issue.
