I thought, why not try it, so I made a short list and put your css in it (with the strict DOC type). I see the difference the way IE displays it. Font type is different as well as the positions of the bullets. They are behind the list items, instead of in front. In both cases (IE and FF) the list items were not at the same vertical position.
As soon as you remove float the bullets are at the right place again and the list items are neatly placed below each other. Is this the problem you were having, the bullets at the incorrect place and the text out of line?
