Yeah Suzy is right, you should use "if lte IE6" (if less than or equal to IE6) instead of "if IE", otherwise your compatibility styles will apply to IE8 and IE9 also with likely unintended effects.
You can have more than one of these conditional comments so you could have in the same document:
if lte IE6 = IE 5.5 + 6 compatibility fixes
if IE7 = IE7 compatibility fixes
if IE = CSS3 replacements etc (maybe needs to be "if lte IE8" since IE9 supports some CSS3 styles.
