Images do NOT go between heading tags regardless.
Why not? I do it all the time.
And AFAIK there is nothing to stop you placing text above an H1 or to style this text as you see fit. It happens all the time (breadcrumbs is a good example). I am not aware of any problem with doing this but feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
