I don't think the OP is taking about hiding content, he/she is talking about basic styles. I have styled text to be larger than H1 styling before and placed it above the H1 with no ill effects. This is not hiding text. It's just CSS styling and I very much doubt that Google would see any wrong in it. (My 2p)
