We're long beyond CSS 1.0. Currently CSS3 modules are slowly entering CR status and that means widespread usage is recommended (and needed to convince the slackers among the browser makers to clean up their act).

Letting yourself be limited with CSS1.0 will make for a very poor set of possibilities.

The CSS validator at W3.org indeed likes to give waring about colors. If you know what you're doing, you can ignore them. They are NOT errors, just warnings.
