That part of the Google speed stuff is IMHO promoting "classitis", a thing we try to discourage out here as it's considered bad code.

Moreover adding a class everywhere is going to bloat your html.

I can't get it that they promote gzip compression and then worry about looking up a descender selector in the DOM.

Esp. for static pages I strongly doubt there's anything even noticeable.
